Okay, so I’m cheating, as I write this at 4:30 p.m.

That’s okay; my body played an April Fool’s Day joke on me this morning and kept me in bed until 5:45, and I ran out of time to do what I needed to do. I was not amused, let me tell you!

Today, I had an excellent coaching call with a new client, and it was one of those experiences where the minds just seem to meld and the information exchange is free and easy. Okay, maybe it wasn’t as easy for my client as I took her to some places of discomfort, but she went along and did what she needed to do.

I tell you about this call because of how well it went, and because the success of the call was a result of several things. I won’t go into deep detail due to confidentialities, but I will reveal what made our call so successful.

First of all, my client has reached a place in her business where the pain of staying where she is at is greater than the discomfort of change, and that is such a good place to be. I say it’s a good place to be because, as humanoids, we usually have to get to that place to embrace the changes we need to undergo in order to move forwards in life.

Secondly, my client came to the call ready to play at a high level, and that is critically important. Before the call takes place, I require the completion of a 21-page in-depth questionnaire that probes into many aspects of business, and a few of personal life. Before this call, I received the most amazing responses on this questionnaire, so I knew the game would be high-level.

Third, my client came to the call with prepared questions and expectations, which is not so common.

I relate these things to you because I see a lot of lessons from this call that you could take and apply to your business life, such as:

  1. Are you prepared for the discomfort of change? It’s easy to just say ‘I sure am!’, but ask yourself “Am I ready for change, and the discomfort that comes with it? Really ready, not just paying lip service?”
  2. Do you show up to work every day ready to play at a high level? How high?
  3. Do you have prepared questions, scripts, dialogues? Do you role play?

In my time as a real estate coach, going back to 1994, I’ve seen a great many agents fritter away a ton of money on ineffective coaching programs. What I’ve come to realize over the years is that it is typically not fair to place all the blame on the coaching program. Remember the saying ‘You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink’? Same goes for coaching clients.
